AAU basketball teams come to Springfield for the Best of the Best tournament

by The Republican Sports Desk

Thursday May 28, 2009, 8:13 PM

SPRINGFIELD - Which AAU basketball teams north of the mid-Atlantic are the best of the best?

That will be decided by Sunday.

The Best of the Best Boys & Girls Basketball Tournaments will be held throughout Springfield Saturday and Sunday, with 48 teams in nine divisions vying for championships at the elite first-year event.

"Every team that's coming to the event this weekend either had to finish high in their state tournament, a super regional, or another very high-level type of tournament," said Colin Tabb, General Manager for BasketBull, LLC, which is coordinating the tournament. "All these teams have credentials that back up their invitation."

In other words, teams had to earn their way to this tournament

11U Finals
Hudson River Hornets 49 Springfield Lady Ballers 38
In an extremely physical game that featured two of the elite players in the 11U division squaring off against one another-Taya Brown (22 points) for the Ballers and Tony Johnson (12 points) for the Hornets-the team from the Empire state outlasted the Ballers by using a great inside-outside game with Johnson down low, and Mary Kendall (13 points) on the outside.
The game was a true battle that saw the opening half go back and forth with each team trading baskets, ultimately leading to a score of 23 apiece at intermission. The depth of the Hornets proved too much for the Ballers, however, as they simply ran out of gas in the game's final minutes which was when the Hornets made their run to secure the victory.
Although it was in a losing effort, the performance by Brown cannot go unnoticed. Whether it was hitting several shots from the perimeter, or going inside, she really made the Ballers click on offense. The Hornets simply had too many weapons in the end, however, that not even Brown could keep up with.

After the first 2 games, Hornets beat the CT Wave-Regional champions by 30+ then taking on the NH Shooting Stars, NH Regional champions winning by 15+, the “buzz” at the tournament was Hornets are the team to beat—well it ended up being just that a “buzz”.  The girls go 4-0 to win the title of “Best of the Best” for  Mid-Atlantic region.  The entire team contributed showing that unrelenting defense and stamina pays off as the team out hustled all competition!

Positive Coaching Alliance

All Hornets Coaches will be Double Goal Certified for the 2011 Season.   Double-Goal Coaches®, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports.

Mission

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a nonprofit organization founded at Stanford University with the mission to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth. PCA was created to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience.

We have three national goals:

  1. Replace the "win-at-all-cost" model of coaching with the Double-Goal Coach®, who wants to win but has a second, more important, goal of using sports to teach life lessons;
  2. Teach youth sports organization leaders how to create an organizational culture in which Honoring the Game is the norm; and
  3. Spark and fuel a "social epidemic" of Positive Coaching that will sweep this country.
There are many people in this nation who want to change the culture of youth sports, but they do not feel equipped to do so. Positive Coaching Alliance has developed practical tools to change the culture of youth sports and is making them available to coaches, parents, league organizers and others who will fire this movement.

Congratulations Hornets Players

Great Job, the community greatly appreciated your efforts, bearing the cold weather really paid off.
