FAQ's Hudson River Hornets 2012 AAU Season

Frequently Asked Questions

How many teams will the Hornets have this year?

We will have a minimum of 10 teams and a maximum number of teams in the program in any given season is 12.

Will all teams hold open tryouts?

Most teams will probably be returning the core of their team but in some instances additional players may be added.  For those teams there will be open tryouts to fill roster spots. The registration fee for tryouts will be $30. For more information on tryouts and other important program information, please check the website often.

How many players will be carried on a roster?

The goal of the organization is for every player to improve over the course of the season and to do that we feel it is best to cap the rosters at 10. Each Coach will have the ability to add one additional player for a maximum of 11.

When does the season start and end?

Tryouts will begin in early February. Bootcamp will begin in late February or early March depending on when each Coach has finalized their roster. Once bootcamp is completed Coaches will begin practices. For most teams tournaments will begin in April and continue thru June. If a team qualifies for Nationals the season could extend until late August.

Will this years practices include speed and agility training?

Unfortunately this year we will not be doing speed and agility, however in place of speed and agility each team will participate in a pre-season boot camp. Every player will work on all facets of the game in order to prepare for the upcoming season. Each team will be scheduled for 6-8 two hour boot camp sessions and attendance will be mandatory.

How often will teams practice each week?

Each team will be scheduled for a minimum of two practices a week for either 1.5 or 2 hours per practice. Additional practices may be held if a Coach decides that their team needs to further prepare for an upcoming tournament.

Practice policy: Are all practices Mandatory?

Yes, with a limited roster it is extremely important that players attend practice. If a player is active in multiple sports during the AAU season it is important that the parents discuss this with the Coach prior to finalizing the roster. It is not fair to the Coach or other team members to have certain players regularly miss practice for other commitments. We require a full commitment and if a player cannot adhere, it is best to not commit to the team.

Does every player play every game?

This is high level basketball and not a recreation league so no minimum playing time requirements are in place, but no player should sit out two games in a row unless it is for disciplinary reasons. In those instances the Coach will speak to the player and parent before the upcoming tournament. Our goal is for everyone to improve and even though practice is important we feel game time is extremely important in the maturation process of players.

How many tournaments will each team play?

Each team has a pre-set budget for tournaments. Depending on the type of tournament and tournament cost some teams may play 8 or more. Those teams playing in show cases may only play 6 or 7 tournaments.

Where will tournaments be played?

Teams will look to compete at the highest level of competition which can require teams to travel the tri-state area as well as other outlying states thus requiring overnight stays. Each Coach will review the tournament schedule with players and parents before finalizing in an effort to ensure that players will be available.

Will the Hornets Host a Tournament?

Yes, April 21st & 22nd and will be the 4th annual Schultz Ford
Shootout. This year the tournament will be open to both boys and girls teams. A work bond will once again be collected at the beginning of the season to cover those families that decide they cannot participate in tournament duties that weekend. Each family will be required to work a minimum of 5 hours each day of the tournament.

What will the registration fees be for the upcoming season?

This year’s fees will be determined. and competitively priced as compared to other programs in the County. The fee includes tournament fees, AAU registration, insurance, practice, boot camp, coaches’ fees, personalized sneaker bag, boot camp T-shirt and use of uniform. The registration fee does not include transportation or overnight travel accommodations. Unfortunately, we do not offer any multiple child discounts.

Will the Hornets hold fundraisers?

Yes, the tournament is the only, mandatory fundraiser which helps offset the true cost to run the program. There will be other fundraisers held and it is extremely important that families assist us whenever possible with fund raising activities.

Why Play for the Hudson River Hornets?

The Hudson River Hornets program provides the highest level of coaching in the County with almost all coaches having High School or College level experience. This provides the players with the best opportunity to improve their skills and basketball IQ. The Hornets founders are not interested in being the biggest program with the most teams we are more concerned about the ability to provide the best opportunities for players to reach their potential.

Parent Responsibility and Commitment?

Parents are responsible to make sure that their child is to practice on time; this means that they are ready to take the court in sneakers at least 5 minutes before the scheduled start of practice. If you need to arrange car pools in order to make sure you adhere to this please make every effort to do so. Parents must refrain from ‘coaching” their child during games, it is important that only the Coach coaches during the game so not to confuse the player. If you are unhappy about something and feel it is necessary to speak with the Coach we ask that you wait 24 hours before confronting the Coach. If you do not adhere to this policy your child may be removed from the team. If after contacting the Coach you do not feel the situation has been resolved you may contact either program President or Vice President directly to assist with the matter.
